"Chasing Mavericks" è ispirato alla vera storia del fenomeno del surf Jay Moriarity (interpretato dall'esordiente Jonny Weston). Quando a 15 anni Jay scopre che Mavericks, il leggendario paradiso dei surfisti con le più grandi onde sulla Terra, non solo è reale, ma si trova a poche miglia dalla sua casa di Santa Cruz, chiede l'aiuto di Frosty Hesson (interpretato da Gerard Butler), una leggenda locale per addestrarlo a sopravvivere. Quando Jay e Frosty s'imbarcano nel loro tentativo di realizzare l'impossibile, stringono una singolare amicizia che trasforma le loro vite, così che il loro tentativo di domare Mavericks diventa molto più che surf. Chasing Mavericks è stato realizzato con l'aiuto di alcuni dei più grandi nomi del mondo del surf e dispone di alcune delle più strabilianti riprese reali su onde mai catturate in un film.
