In un grande appartamento in cima alla città abita una coppia. Si amano. Lei è pittrice, lui un attore di successo. È un pomeriggio come tanti - eccetto che non è affatto un pomeriggio come tanti, né per loro né per chiunque altro. Perché domani, alle 4.44 di mattina, secondo più, secondo meno, il mondo finirà più velocemente di quanto il peggior catastrofista avrebbe potuto immaginare. Arriverà lo sfacelo finale, non senza preavvisi, ma senza vie d'uscita. Non ci saranno sopravvissuti. Come sempre, c'è chi accendendosi l'ultima sigaretta e stringendosi i paraocchi spererà in un qualche rinvio. Un miracolo. Non i nostri due amanti. Loro - come la maggioranza della popolazione della Terra - hanno accettato il loro destino; il mondo sta per finire.
