Quando sul finire degli anni Sessanta dell'Ottocento il giornalista e avventuriero americano Henry M. Stanley ritorna dalle guerre indiane occidentali, l'editore James Gordon Bennet lo manda in Africa a trovare David Livingstone, il famoso medico scozzese dato per scomparso. Dopo essre riuscito a scovare Livingstone vivo e vegeto, stanley rimane profondamente colpito dal lavoro che l'uomo ha svolto in Africa portando medicine e religione ai nativi.
