Peter dona fiori alle donne della sua vita, prima che il consumismo dissipi la sua anima, riveli l'inadeguatezza dell'amore in un mondo governato dall'istituzione genitoriale, dall'ideologia borghese. In un mirabile ricamo di flashback e ingannevoli - rivelatori - flashforward, Fassbinder declina l'analisi marxista nella società coeva, deferente ai costrutti freudiani della psiche (il complesso edipico, promotore di violenza) trattenuto dal realismo, prima che il rigoglio manierista prorompa nella sua opera. Ispirato a una storia vera e realizzato per la tv, ha tutta l'urgenza del vero cinema.
