La parola "whistleblower" indica una persona impiegata all’interno di un’organizzazione, pubblica o privata, che testimonia un comportamento illegale potenzialmente dannoso per la collettività e decide di segnalarlo. Il 3 giugno del 2017, l'ex traduttrice del NSA Reality Winner decide di consegnare alla testata online The Intercept un report dell'intelligence americana riguardante l'interferenza russa sulle elezioni presidenziali statunitensi del 2016. L'FBI la arresta prontamente per interrogarla.
