Richard Henry Sellers (Londra, 8 settembre 1925 – Londra, 24 luglio 1980) è stato un comico e attore britannico, noto soprattutto come l'ispettore capo Clouseau nella serie di film La Pantera Rosa, per aver interpretato tre diversi personaggi in Il dottor Stranamore, come Clare Quilty in Lolita, e come l'uomo-bambino e dipendente dalla TV Chance il giardiniere nel suo penultimo film, Essere lì. L'attrice protagonista Bette Davis una volta ha detto di lui: "Non è un attore, è un camaleonte". Sellers è diventato famoso nella serie comica della BBC Radio The Goon Show. La sua capacità di parlare con diversi accenti (ad esempio, francese, indiano, americano, tedesco e accenti regionali britannici), insieme al suo talento nel ritrarre una serie di personaggi con effetto comico, hanno contribuito al suo successo come personaggio radiofonico e attore cinematografico e gli sono valsi nomination e premi nazionali e internazionali. Molti dei suoi personaggi si sono radicati nella percezione pubblica del suo lavoro. La vita privata di Sellers è stata caratterizzata da tumulti e crisi, e includeva problemi emotivi e abuso di sostanze. Sellers si sposò quattro volte ed ebbe tre figli dai primi due matrimoni. Figura enigmatica, ha spesso affermato di non avere identità al di fuori dei ruoli che ha interpretato, ma ha lasciato il suo ritratto poiché "ha filmato ossessivamente le sue case, la sua famiglia, le persone che conosceva, tutto ciò che portava la sua fantasia fino alla fine della sua vita, film intimi che sono rimasti nascosti fino a molto tempo dopo la sua morte nel 1980". Il regista Peter Hall ha dichiarato: "Peter aveva la capacità di identificarsi completamente con un'altra persona e di pensare fisicamente, mentalmente ed emotivamente nella loro pelle. Da dove viene? Non ne ho idea. È una maledizione? Spesso. Penso che in questo business non sia sufficiente avere talento. Devi avere talento per gestire il talento. E credo che Peter non l'avesse".
