Un'artista pop-R&B americana, produttrice, ballerina, modella e attrice. Nel 1983 è diventata la prima donna di origine afroamericana ad essere incoronata Miss America, ma uno scandalo che coinvolgeva fotografie di nudo l'ha costretta a rinunciare presto al suo titolo. Williams si è ripresa lanciando una carriera come intrattenitrice, guadagnando nomination ai Grammy, agli Emmy e ai Tony Award. Williams ha pubblicato il suo album di debutto The Right Stuff nel 1988, che ha generato le hit "The Right Stuff", un #1 su Hot Dance Songs, e "Dreamin'", un #1 su R&B e #8 su Billboard Hot 100. Il suo secondo album in studio, The Comfort Zone, nel 1991 ha raggiunto la vetta della Billboard R&B Album Chart e ha generato la hit numero uno, "Save the Best for Last". Nel 1994 ha debuttato a Broadway nel musical Kiss of the Spider Woman. Nel 2009, Williams ha pubblicato il suo ottavo album in studio, The Real Thing. Nel 2010 è entrata a far parte del cast della serie Desperate Housewives nel ruolo della ricca donna viziata Renee Perry.
