Telly Paretta wordt gekweld door de herinnering aan de dood van haar 9-jarig zoontje Sam. Terwijl ze het verlies en de daaropvolgende vervreemding van haar man Jim probeert te verwerken, krijgt ze van haar psychiater Dr. Munce te horen dat ze aan waanideeën lijdt en dat haar zoontje nooit bestaan heeft. Geschokt probeert ze sporen van Sams bestaan te vinden, maar die lijken wel te zijn uitgewist...
