Frannie is lerares in New York. Vlakbij haar huis wordt een deel van een lichaam gevonden. Rechercheur Malloy komt bij haar om te vragen of zij iets gehoord of gezien heeft, maar zij kan hem niks vertellen. Wel wil zij alle misselijkmakende details over de moord weten. Gedurende het onderzoek naar de moord zoeken de twee elkaar steeds meer op en de aantrekkingskracht die zich ontwikkelt is onstuimig, onweerstaanbaar en soms zelfs bijna pervers. Wanneer er steeds meer moorden gepleegd worden, ook in Frannies directe omgeving, moet zij kiezen tussen emotie en verstand. En moet ze de mysterieuze en aantrekkelijke agent confronteren die haar leven zo op z'n kop gegooid heeft.
