Prins Siddhartha is erfgenaam van het Shakya-koninkrijk, dat voortdurend in oorlog is met het machtigere Kosala-koninkrijk. Zijn vader probeert hem op te voeden als krijgersleider en hem te beschermen tegen de ellende van de wereld. Siddhartha ontmoet het jonge outcast-meisje Migaila en ervaart voor het eerst liefde, maar is ook getuige van het lijden dat de mensheid teistert. Ondertussen stijgt Chapra in Kosala, ondanks zijn bescheiden afkomst, door het leger om een held en generaal van het leger te worden. Een laatste confrontatie tussen de twee koninkrijken dwingt Siddhartha om het pad dat hij volgt opnieuw te evalueren.
