Andrew is een romanschrijver die in de wereld vooral bekend is als A.N. Dyer. Hij schreef zijn eerste boek toen hij 27 was, en het werd meteen een klassieker en een cultus werd gecreëerd rond de ongrijpbare auteur. Andrew wordt op een ochtend wakker, ervan overtuigd dat hij op het punt staat te sterven. Hij weet dat hij, nu zijn tijd op aarde slinkt, de belangrijkste relaties van zijn leven moet rechtzetten, en dus roept hij zijn zonen op om bij hem te zijn. Het is bijna 20 jaar geleden dat een 'incident' het huis van Dyer uit elkaar scheurde. Een incident heeft een naam: Andy. Andy is de reden dat zijn wereldberoemde vader, Andrew, niet meer met zijn volwassen zonen, Richard en Jamie, praat, noch met zijn ex-vrouw, Isabel. Wanneer zijn zonen echter arriveren, beladen met hun eigen problemen, vraagt Andreas hun niet om vergeving, zoals ze hadden verwacht; In plaats daarvan vertelt hij hen iets dat zo wild is dat het onmogelijk waar kan zijn.
