De jaren '70. Jackie Moon (Will Ferrell) is zowel de eigenaar, coach als topspeler van het basketbalteam Flint Michigan Tropics. De Tropics komen uit in de American Basketball Association, die op het punt staat samen te gaan met de NBA. Slechts vier teams uit de ABA mogen het volgende seizoen in de NBA verder gaan, en Moon is vastbesloten de Tropics naar deze eerste vier de loodsen.
