Sophie wordt weggerukt uit haar weeshuis 's morgens vroeg door de GVR (Grote Vriendelijke Reus). Ze merkt dat hij zich bezighoudt met mysterieuze activiteiten. Ze is al snel op haar gemak, wanneer ze leert dat het de taak van de GVR is om dromen te verzamelen, ordenen en om de aangename dromen aan kinderen te geven. Ze sluit zich bij hem aan die avond, maar gemene reuzen volgen hen en zij zijn van plan om de kinderen van de wereld op te eten.
