Deze film gaat over het leven van Audie Murphy, die zichzelf speelt. Hij werd geboren in 1924 als één van de vele kinderen. De vader liet het al gauw afweten. Als zijn moeder sterft, gaat hij in dienst. Hij wordt bij luchtmacht en marine afgewezen, maar bij de landmacht vindt hij een plaaatsje.
