Spanje is bijna volledig in de handen van de Moren, wanneer de jonge Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, door de Moren El Cid genoemd, in de tweede helft van de 11de eeuw wil huwen met de bloedmooie Jimena. Zijn wens, om vrede te stichten tussen moslims en christenen, brengt hem ertoe enkele gevangen emirs vrij te laten.
