Als kind heeft Brian McCaffrey zijn vader, een brandweerman, zien sterven. Jaren later sluit hij zich zelf aan bij de brandweer, waar zijn broer Stephen al werkt. De twee hebben vaak ruzie, wat alleen maar versterkt wordt door het feit dat ze collega's zijn.
