In 1903 ontmoet Dr. Bailey een vreemde vrouw in de trein en hoort vervolgens dat ze gestorven is onder mysterieuze omstandigheden. Hij raakt bevriend met de familie Bedereaux, waarvan alle leden neurotisch en geheimzinnig gedrag vertonen. Door de schoonheid van Alida Bedereaux wordt hij steeds dieper in hun wereldje getrokken.
