Siegfried, zoon van Koning Sigmund, reist rond, maakt zwaarden en hoort verhalen over Krimhilde. Op weg naar het Bourgondische hof doodt hij de draak Fafnir en baadt in zijn bloed, wat hem onoverwinnelijk maakt.
