Il sogno di Butterfly (1939)
De Italiaanse filmmaker Carmine Gallone verkeerde nog in zijn 'operette'-modus toen hij Il Sogno di Butterfly (Droom van de vlinder) uit 1938 regisseerde. Maria Cebotari speelt operadiva Rosa Belloni, die momenteel de hoofdrol speelt in een productie van Puccini's Madama Butterfly. De plot wordt ingewikkelder wanneer Rosa's backstage-leven de beproevingen van het personage dat ze portretteert begint te weerspiegelen. Het hoogtepunt komt wanneer Harry Peters (Fosco Giachetti), de Amerikaanse vader van Rosa's onwettige kind, na vier jaar terugkeert met zijn nieuwe vrouw op sleeptouw, wat onverbiddelijk leidt tot een treurig einde, zowel op als buiten het podium. Critici klaagden over de ondermaatse fotografie in Il Sogno di Butterfly, maar dit zou te wijten kunnen zijn aan slecht laboratoriumwerk.
