Beschrijft de geschiedenis, ideologie en esthetiek van Noorse black metal, een muzikale subcultuur die berucht is om zowel een reeks moorden en kerkbranden als om haar unieke muzikale en visuele esthetiek. Dit is de eerste film die echt licht werpt op een beweging die tot nu toe gehuld was in geruchten en vertroebeld door onnauwkeurige en oppervlakkige beschrijvingen. Met exclusieve interviews met de muzikanten zelf, onderzoekt Until the Light Takes Us elk aspect van de controversiële beweging die de aandacht van de wereld heeft getrokken.
