Wyoming Territory, 1892. De winter is net voorbij wanneer de cowboy Monte Walsh en zijn collega’s Chester 'Chet' Rollins en de jonge Frank 'Shorty' Austin terugkomen van een langdurige klus. Inmiddels blijken veel ranches vanwege de extreme kou gesloten te zijn en de overige ranches zijn verkocht aan een groot veebedrijf uit het Oosten. Er heerst werkloosheid alom, maar ogenschijnlijk is er voor Monte nog niets aan de hand. Het leven voor Monte verandert echter wanneer een oude vriend bij een roofoverval op zijn winkel vermoord wordt door Shorty, er overal ranchhulpen ontslagen worden en ook zijn liefje uit de saloon, de prostituee 'Countess' Martine, ontslagen wordt.
