Madame X (1929)
Een jonge, ontrouwe vrouw en moeder wordt door haar koude, onvergeeflijke echtgenoot, de procureur-generaal van Frankrijk, het huis uitgezet. Ze mag haar driejarige zoon nooit meer zien, ondanks haar oprechte pogingen om het goed te maken. Jarenlang zoekt de moeder haar toevlucht in het buitenland en bij Absint. Uiteindelijk verdedigt haar zoon, een jonge en veelbelovende advocaat, haar onbewust in de rechtbank. Ruth Chatterton zet een schitterende prestatie neer in deze vroege geluidsfilm in haar vertolking van Madame X.
