Een groep trotse Cheyennes leeft onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden in een dor reservaat in Oklahoma. De stam besluit terug te keren naar hun oorspronkelijke jachtgebieden in de Rocky Mountains. De Amerikaanse president beveelt een cavalerie-afdeling de indianen op afstand te escorteren, want hij twijfelt tussen zijn humanitaire idealen en angst dat de eens beruchte Cheyennes opnieuw een oorlog zullen beginnen.
