Mary Beth (Kathleen Quinlan) en haar twee dochters moeten niets hebben van Zeus, de viezige straathond van haar buurmanTerry (Steve Guttenberg) en zijn zoon Jordan. Mary Beth kan haar dierenliefde wel kwijt bij haar onderzoek naar het gedrag van de dolfijn Roxanne. Wanneer Zeus als verstekeling op haar boot meevaart, is Mary Beth getuige van een wonderbaarlijk fenomeen. Zeus en Roxanne blijken perfect met elkaar te communiceren en ontwikkelen een onverklaarbare band. Bepaalde individuen willen die band echter koste wat kost dwarsbomen. Maar Mary Beth en Terry en hun kinderen willen zelfs hun levens riskeren om de vriendschap tussen de hond en de dolfijn te redden.
