Hoe glijdt een natie af naar oorlog? Dateline-Saigon profileert de controversiële verslaggeving van vijf Pulitzer Prize-winnende journalisten - David Halberstam van The New York Times, Malcolm Browne van Associated Press, Peter Arnett en de legendarische fotojournalist Horst Faas, en Neil Sheehan van UPI - tijdens de eerste jaren van de oorlog in Vietnam, terwijl president John F. Kennedy in het geheim Amerikaanse troepen inzet voor wat aanvankelijk door sommigen wordt afgedaan als 'een leuke kleine oorlog in een land van tijgers en olifanten'. 'Als de overheid de waarheid spreekt, worden verslaggevers een relatief onbelangrijk doorgeefluik naar wat er gebeurt', zegt Halberstam. 'Maar als de overheid de waarheid niet vertelt, de waarheid begint te verdraaien, de waarheid verbergt, dan wordt de journalist onvrijwillig oneindig veel belangrijker.'
