In dit gedramatiseerde verslag van zijn vroege carrière als advocaat in Illinois wordt Abraham Lincoln geboren in een bescheiden blokhut, waar hij door zijn eerste liefde, Ann Rutledge, wordt aangemoedigd om rechten te gaan studeren. Na haar tragische dood vestigt Lincoln een advocatenpraktijk in Springfield, waar hij de jonge Mary Todd ontmoet. Lincolns juridische vaardigheden worden op de proef gesteld wanneer hij de moeilijke taak op zich neemt om twee broers te verdedigen die beschuldigd zijn van moord.
