De grootsheid, ondergang en wedergeboorte van Hammer, het vlaggenschip van de Britse populaire cinema, voornamelijk van 1955 tot 1968. Gemartelde vrouwen en sadistische monsters bevolkten onderdrukkende scenario's in provocerende producties die de censuur choqueerden en critici walgden, maar het publiek fascineerden. Films waarin horror in aanstootgevende kleuren werd vertoond: vreselijke verhalen, verteld zonder vooroordelen, die angst, bloed, seks en verbluffende optredens boden.
