Henry Jekyll is een onrustige man. Zijn vrouw stierf aan een longontsteking. Hij wil zijn schoonzus, maar haar vader verbiedt elk contact. En zijn experimenten met de dubbele aard van de mens hebben een persoonlijkheidssplitsende drug opgeleverd die hij op zichzelf heeft getest, waardoor hij is veranderd in een ongeremde bruut die op zoek is naar gewelddadige en onwaardige genoegens. Jekyll raakt snel verslaafd aan de smerige vrijheid die de drug teweegbrengt. Hij kan de meest plezierige weerzinwekkende daden begaan, vervolgens terugkeren naar zijn laboratorium en een tegengif gebruiken om terug te keren naar zijn oorspronkelijke vorm, zodat zijn verheven persoonlijkheid onaangetast blijft.
