Madame Butterfly (1932)
Pinkerton trouwt met Cho-Cho San in Japan, tijdens zijn verlof aan land. Wanneer hij vertrekt, houdt zij zijn Japanse huis zoals hij het achterliet. Drie jaar later keert hij terug, hertrouwd in Amerika, en vertelt Cho-Cho dat hun affaire voorbij is. Ze heeft in zijn afwezigheid een kind gekregen, dat naar haar familie wordt gestuurd, voordat ze zelfmoord pleegt.
