Tegen het einde van de jaren zeventig was discomuziek, die als te mainstream werd beschouwd, dood. Maar dj's en dansvloeren hadden nog steeds behoefte aan nieuwe platen en snellere ritmes. Gebaseerd op synthesizerklanken veroverde de hi-nrg (high energy) stijl de gayclubs voordat hij in de jaren tachtig de hitlijsten bereikte.
