Door hun trauma trekken honderden vluchtelingenkinderen zich terug uit de onzekerheid van hun leven naar een comateuze toestand, het zogenaamde 'terugtredingssyndroom'. Dit kan maanden, soms jaren duren. Deze mysterieuze ziekte lijkt alleen in Zweden te bestaan.
