Ali & Ava (2022)
Ali is een altijd goedgehumeurde en betrokken huisbaas. Wanneer hij een kind van één van zijn huurders van school haalt, biedt hij Ava, een in Ierland geboren lerares en alleenstaande moeder van vijf, een lift aan. Ze hebben meteen een klik door hun gedeelde liefde voor muziek, ook al verschilt de smaak van Ali met zijn voorkeur voor heftige Britse punk en hiphop met die van Ava. Er bloeit een relatie op die al snel wordt overschaduwd door de sporen van Ava’s eerdere relatie en het ineenstorten van het huwelijk van Ali. Regisseur Clio Barnard werd voor deze film geïnspireerd door mensen die zij ontmoette tijdens het maken van haar veelgeprezen speelfilms The Arbor en The Selfish Giant. Ali & Ava is een optimistische, romantische film die zich afspeelt in de sobere setting van de voormalige industriestad Bradford. De score met muziek, van The Specials en Bob Dylan tot recente club- en pophits, dragen bij aan de energieke sfeer van de film.
