De film belicht het tragische en bizarre leven van de inmiddels overleden grootmeester van het schaken: de legendarische Bobby Fischer. Het drama in Fischers carrière krijgt ruimschoots aandacht. Van zijn moeilijke jeugd tot aan zijn sterrenstatus als wereldkampioen. En van de icoon van de Koude Oorlog tot aan zijn voortvluchtige leven. De documentaire toont het leven van een van de meest beruchte en mysterieuze karakters van de twintigste eeuw, die het grootste toernooi waarschijnlijk in zijn eigen hoofd speelde.
