Een zwerver genaamd Timothee arriveert in 1865 in een Frans dorp en doet alsof hij doofstom is. Hij gebruikt trucs om een mooie jonge vrouw genaamd Josephine te hypnotiseren en maakt misbruik van haar totdat hij wordt gearresteerd en berecht voor zijn misdaden.
