Toen de Franse schrijfster Marguerite Duras (1914-96) in 1950 haar roman Un barrage contre le Pacifique publiceerde, kwam ze heel dicht bij het winnen van de prestigieuze Prix Goncourt. Ondertussen leed Frankrijk in Indochina zijn eerste militaire nederlagen in zijn oorlog tegen de Việt Minh, de rebellenbeweging voor onafhankelijkheid.
