1930, New York City. Georgia Nolan is een zestienjarig meisje. Haar vader is brandweerman en Georgia wil graag in zijn voetsporen treden. Helaas is het zo dat vrouwen geen kans maken op een baan bij de brandweer. Dan krijgt de stad te maken met een reeks mysterieuze branden, waarbij brandweermannen verdwijnen. Georgie ziet haar kans schoon en vermomt zich als een jongen.
