De plaatselijke verslaggever Adam Carlson kan niet wachten om te ontsnappen uit het noordelijke puntje van Alaska om een grotere markt te ontdekken. Maar net op het moment dat hij een primeur heeft met het belangrijkste item uit zijn carrière, begint de rest van de wereld er ook op te duiken. Wanneer een oliemagnaat, staatshoofden en hongerige journalisten neerstrijken in het ijskoude gebied maakt Adam zich het meest zorgen om Rachel Kramer. Niet alleen is ze een uitgesproken milieuactivist, ze is ook zijn ex-vriendin. Als de tijd begint te dringen moeten ze het opnemen tegen een onwaarschijnlijk verbond van inheemse bewoners, oliemaatschappijen en Russische en Amerikaanse militairen, om drie walvissen die gevangen zitten in de poolcirkel te bevrijden.
