Broeder Marie-Victorin was 46 toen hij de 23-jarige Marcelle Gauvreau ontmoette. Beiden zijn dicht bij de dood geweest en delen dezelfde liefde voor God en de natuur. Hij wordt haar leraar, later wordt zij zijn assistent. Hun vriendschap evolueert. Marie-Victorin biedt Marcelle verschillende lezingen over seksualiteit aan, waar ze graag commentaar op geeft vanuit haar eigen intieme ervaringen. In een briefwisseling die zal duren tot aan de dood van Marie-Victorin onderzoeken ze menselijke verlangens en 'biologie zonder sluier'. Deze grote kuise liefde, de liefde voor de flora van Quebec, zet hen ertoe aan hun eigen relatie met de liefde en de natuur in twijfel te trekken.
