De Gaia Za is een heilig boekdeel dat vele oude en krachtige spreuken bevat die moeten worden ontgrendeld door een zogenaamde Uitverkorene, die naar verwachting zal worden geboren in een van de twee leidende families: de Khans of de Marajis. Che Khan wil het lot van de clan niet aan de goden overlaten en besluit het heft in eigen handen te nemen door de moord op een nieuwe Maraji-baby te beramen, die mogelijk het kind in kwestie is. Daarmee ontketent hij een oorlog.
