Steven Seagal is een Amerikaanse actiefilmster, producer, schrijver, krijgskunstenaar, gitarist en reserve plaatsvervangend sheriff. Seagal, 7e dan zwarte band in Aikido, begon zijn volwassen leven als Aikido-instructeur in Japan. Hij werd de eerste buitenlander die een Aikido Dojo in Japan exploiteerde. Later verhuisde hij naar Los Angeles, Californië, waar hij in 1988 zijn filmdebuut maakte in Above the Law. In 1991 speelde hij in drie succesvolle films, en zou grotere bekendheid verwerven in Under Siege (1992), waar hij Casey Ryback, de terrorismebestrijdingsexpert van Navy SEALs, speelde. Zijn imago raakte echter aangetast toen zowel On Deadly Ground (1994, dat hij regisseerde) als Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995) het slecht deden in de bioscoop. Tijdens de tweede helft van de jaren negentig speelde hij in nog drie theatrale films en de direct-to-video The Patriot. Afgezien van Exit Wounds (2001) en Half Past Dead (2002) verschoof zijn carrière bijna volledig naar direct-to-video-films (vaak low-budget producties en opgenomen in Europa of Azië). Tussen 1998 en 2009 verscheen hij in totaal 22 hiervan. Op 59-jarige leeftijd keerde hij eindelijk terug naar het grote scherm als Torrez in de film Machete uit 2010. Seagal is ook een artiest en gitarist en de oprichter van Steven Seagal Enterprises. Naast zijn professionele prestaties staat hij ook bekend als milieuactivist, dierenrechtenactivist en aanhanger van de 14e Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso en de Tibetaanse onafhankelijkheidsbeweging.
