Een acteur, filmregisseur, producent en scenarioschrijver. Gibson, geboren in Peekskill, New York, verhuisde met zijn ouders naar Sydney, Australië toen hij 12 jaar oud was en studeerde later acteren aan het Australian National Institute of Dramatic Art. Na te zijn verschenen in de Mad Max en Lethal Weapon-serie, ging Gibson regisseren en schitteren in het met een Academy Award bekroonde Braveheart. In 2004 regisseerde en produceerde hij The Passion of the Christ, een controversiële maar succesvolle film over de laatste uren uit het leven van Jezus Christus. Buiten zijn carrière hebben opmerkingen van Gibson tot beschuldigingen van homofobie, antisemitisme, racisme en vrouwenhaat geleid; hij heeft de uitspraken eerder toegeschreven aan zijn alcoholisme.
