James Byron Dean (8 februari 1931 - 30 september 1955) was een Amerikaanse filmacteur. Hij is een cultureel icoon, het best belichaamd in de titel van zijn meest gevierde film, Rebel Without a Cause (1955), waarin hij speelde als onrustige tiener Jim Stark uit Los Angeles. De andere twee rollen die zijn sterrendom bepaalden, waren als eenling Cal Trask in East of Eden (1955), en als de nors boer, Jett Rink, in Giant (1956). Dean's blijvende bekendheid en populariteit berust op zijn uitvoeringen in alleen deze drie films, alle hoofdrollen. Zijn voortijdige dood bij een auto-ongeluk bevestigde zijn legendarische status. Dean was de eerste acteur die een postume Academy Award-nominatie voor Beste Acteur ontving en blijft de enige acteur die twee postume acteer nominaties heeft gehad. In 1999 plaatste het American Film Institute Dean de 18e beste mannelijke filmster op de lijst van 100 jaar ... 100 sterren van hun AFI.
