Dustin Lee Hoffman (geboren 8 augustus 1937) is een Amerikaanse acteur en filmmaker. Hij staat bekend om zijn veelzijdige vertolkingen van antihelden en emotioneel kwetsbare personages. Acteur Robert De Niro beschreef hem als "een acteur met het gezicht van de gewone man die de hartverscheurend menselijke kant belichaamde". Al op jonge leeftijd wist Hoffman dat hij in de kunst wilde studeren en ging hij naar het Los Angeles Conservatory of Music; later besloot hij acteur te worden en volgde daarvoor een opleiding aan het Pasadena Playhouse in Los Angeles. Zijn eerste theaterrol was in A Cook for Mr. General uit 1961, waarin hij Ridzinski speelde. In die periode had hij verschillende gastrollen in televisieseries zoals Naked City en The Defenders. Vervolgens speelde hij de hoofdrol in het off-Broadway-stuk Eh? uit 1966, waarvoor hij zowel een Theatre World Award als een Drama Desk Award won. Zijn doorbraakrol was die van Benjamin Braddock in Mike Nichols' veelgeprezen en iconische film The Graduate (1967), waarvoor hij zijn eerste Oscarnominatie ontving. Zijn volgende rol was die van "Ratso" Rizzo in John Schlesingers Midnight Cowboy (1969), waarin hij samen met Jon Voight speelde; beiden ontvingen een Oscarnominatie en de film won uiteindelijk de Oscar voor Beste Film. Hij boekte succes in de jaren 70 met rollen die zijn acteerkunst vormden, waarbij hij moeiteloos genres combineerde in de western Little Big Man (1970), het gevangenisdrama Papillon (1973), als een controversiële en baanbrekende komiek in Bob Fosse's Lenny (1975), Marathon Man naast Laurence Olivier (1976), en als Carl Bernstein die het Watergateschandaal onderzoekt in All the President's Men (1976). In 1979 speelde Hoffman de hoofdrol in het familiedrama Kramer vs. Kramer naast Meryl Streep. Beiden ontvingen een Academy Award voor hun acteerprestaties. Na een pauze van drie jaar keerde Hoffman terug in Sydney Pollacks showbusinesskomedie Tootsie (1982), over een worstelende acteur die zich voordoet als vrouw om een acteerrol te krijgen. Hij keerde terug naar het toneel met een rol als Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman in 1984 en vertolkte die rol een jaar later opnieuw in een televisiefilm, waarvoor hij een Primetime Emmy Award won. In 1987 speelde hij samen met Warren Beatty in Elaine Mays komedie Ishtar. Hij won zijn tweede Academy Award voor Beste Acteur voor zijn vertolking van de autistische savant Ray Babbitt in de film Rain Man uit 1988, waarin hij samen met Tom Cruise speelde. In 1989 werd hij genomineerd voor een Tony Award en een Drama Desk Award voor zijn rol als Shylock in een toneelproductie van The Merchant of Venice. In de jaren negentig speelde hij in films als Warren Beatty's actiekomedie Dick Tracy (1990), Steven Spielbergs Hook (1991) als Captain Hook, de medische rampenfilm Outbreak (1995), het juridische misdaaddrama Sleepers (1996) en de satirische zwarte komedie Wag the Dog (1997) naast Robert De Niro.
