Главный герой - художник, работающий в полиции. По описаниям свидетелей он рисует портреты возможных преступников. После убийства модельера рисовальщику приходится столкнуться с неразрешимой проблемой: портрет возможного убийцы, который он нарисовал со слов единственной свидетельницы, слишком напоминает ему собственную жену. Не желая вмешивать в это дело полицию, наш герой берется за собственное расследование.
