Не единственная, но наиболее известная, экранизация одноименного романа Виктора Гюго. Гуинплен обезображен в детстве по приказу короля. Его усыновляет бродячий артист Урсус. Благодаря своему уродству, мальчик становится очень популярен. За страшным обликом Гуинплена скрывается чуткая, самоотверженная и любящая душа. Он влюбляется в слепую девушку Дею. Король умирает, а его злобный шут начинает строить козни Гуинплену.
