В подростковом возрасте выиграла несколько конкурсов красоты. В кино играла с 1955 года. Три года спустя получила «Оскар» за роль женщины с расстройством множественной личности в драме «Три лица Евы». Снималась в картинах «Долгое жаркое лето», «Из породы беглецов», «Стеклянный зверинец», «Мистер и миссис Бридж», «Филадельфия» и других.
