Родилась Мэриан Росс в Уотертауне в округе Карвер на юге Миннесоты, дочь Эллен (урожденной Гамильтон) и Гордона Росса, она жила в Ваконии, затем переехала в Уиллмар и в конечном итоге в Альберт Ли, Миннесота. В возрасте 13 лет она изменила написание своего имени с «Мэриен» на «Мэрион», потому что посчитала, что так оно будет лучше смотреться на афише.
