Mitten im Kalten Krieg entwickeln die Sowjets ein neuartiges Kampfflugzeug, das im Westen für Unruhe und hektische Aktivität sorgt. Dank Überschallgeschwindigkeit, Tarnkappentechnik und hoch entwickelten Waffensystem ist der „Firefox“, so die inoffizielle Bezeichnung, allen NATO-Flugzeugen weit überlegen. Bisher haben die Sowjets nur einen Prototyp hergestellt, und damit das auch so bleibt, planen Amerikaner und Briten, das Flugzeug zu stehlen. Für diesen heiklen Auftrag wird Air-Force-Pilot und Vietnamkriegsveteran Mitchell Gant ausgewählt. Nicht nur, dass er flließend russisch spricht, er hat auch noch dieselbe Körpergröße, wie der Firefox-Testpilot Oberts Voskow. Mit Hilfe der übergelaufenen sowjetischen Wissenschaftler Baranovich und Semelovsky wird Gant mit der Technologie vertraut gemacht und dann nach Russland eingeschleust, um das Flugzeug zu entführen. Auf seiner gefährlichen Reise sitzen Gant dabei ständig der KGB und das Militär im Nacken...
