Eines windigen herbstlichen Nachmittags wird der Erde der Krieg erklärt. Ray ein Kranführer, und seine zwei Kinder, stehen plötzlich mitten im Geschehen: der Boden reißt auf und stählerne Kolosse erheben sich aus den Asphaltbrocken. Alles was um sie herumsteht verwandeln sie zu Staub. Ray beschließt mit den Kindern zu fliehen. Doch es gibt kaum einen Ort an den sie gelangen, der nicht schon unter Beschuss der Invasoren steht.
