Feiertagsstimmung in New York: Auch der renommierte Psychiater Dr. Nathan Conrad freut sich auf einen angenehmen Tag mit Frau und Kind. Doch was als friedliches Familienfest geplant war, entwickelt sich zum Alptraum: Die achtjährige Tochter Jessie wird entführt – mitten aus ihrem Kinderzimmer heraus. Noch ehe Conrad die Polizei rufen kann, melden sich die Täter, die die gesamte Wohnung mit einer Überwachungsanlage versehen haben. Statt eines Lösegeldes verlangen sie eine Information. Nathan soll binnen weniger Stunden einer traumatisierten Patientin seines Kollegen Dr. Sachs eine mysteriöse Nummer entlocken. Die 18-jährige Elisabeth, Insassin einer psychiatrischen Klinik, ist die Einzige, die den Entführern das geben kann, worauf sie seit zehn Jahren harren: einen Hinweis auf das Versteck des Zehn-Millionen-Dollar-Diamanten, den Elisabeths ermordeter Vater einst bei einem gemeinsamen Coup hatte verschwinden lassen.
